Advice
Come here for advice that will save you money, time and the aggravation of
doing something over again:
1. Sealing a new roof over an existing roof - what's the secret?
Trim
enough off the top edge of the starter shingles so that each shingle fits
perfectly over the tabs of the existing first course. Then cut 6 inches off the
end of the first shingle so that ends won't align with those of the existing
shingles. Nail the starter shingles in place along the entire bottom of the
roof. Cover the starter shingles with full-width shingles, positioning them so
that they hang no more than 3/4 inch over the edge of the roof or gutter apron.
Butt
successive courses against the bottom of existing courses. Apply the remaining
shingles as you would during a new installation. Remove damaged flashing as you
install shingles and replace it with new flashing, shimming it to the proper
height with shingles. Seal seams around flashing with roofing cement.
Tear
off old hip and ridge caps as you approach the top of the roof. Waiting to
remove the old hips and ridges is added protection in case it rains. Replace hip
and ridge caps with new shingles after all other shingling has been completed.
Note: Walking on the roof as part of the inspection is not recommended and
may cause further damage to the roof.
